Significance of Fibers in Diabetes Menu Plan

To have a proper and healthy menu plan is important for all of us. It becomes crucial for the diabetic patients to follow a diabetes menu plan. This plan should include all the nutrients and essential components of a balanced diet in specific quantity to maintain the blood sugar level normal.

We all know that if we are not able to digest our food properly it may cause severe problems. These complications lead to the disease, diabetes. When the food can’t be broken properly it gets stored in the form of glucose due to inadequacy of the hormone insulin. The insulin converts glucose into simple sugars so as to get absorbed easily. This problem leads to diabetes. To prevent this people follow various diabetes menu plans. But the menu plan with food rich in fibers is the best.

Fibers plays vital job in diabetic menu plans. It expedites the process of digestion and keeps the colon and other body organs healthy. It is a magic ingredient, if included in the diabetic diet will surely harvests various benefits for a diabetic. Fibers help in maintaining the blood sugar level normal by slowing the conversion of carbohydrates in the body.

It is recommended that a diabetic should stick to soluble fibers, those which can be soluble in water, as these impart all the benefits a diabetic needs.

There are various sources of these soluble fibers. Some of them are:

  1. The products of whole grain or whole wheat instead of white breads, cereals etc.
  2. Fruits and vegetables in fresh form. Avoid having processed drinks made of fruits or vegetables.
  3. Beans should be included in the diabetic menu plan. Dried beans are even better.

To make the fibers work effectively, you should drink at least 8 glasses of water in a day.

It is more interesting to know that if you are following carbs counting you can easily increase the carbohydrate intake provided that that particular serving has high fiber content.
