If you have diabetes or are close to someone who does there is probably nothing more important when it comes to managing this disease then a good diabetic diet plan. For the newly diagnosed building a diabetes compatible diet can be somewhat overwhelming. Unfortunately there is little choice if one is to live a normal life with this disease.

Anyone with diabetes has to make some significant lifestyle changes to properly manage its long term complications. For those who have a sweet tooth the changes required can be even more difficult to deal with but avoiding high sugar foods will have to become a way of life. Fortunately for most people there are a whole range of diabetic friendly foods and recipes to be found in books and on the internet that will satisfy there most serious food cravings.

When building a diabetic diet plan you need to start with your doctor. While they will not be able to map out a complete plan for you they can give you a general overview of what to expect and point you in the right direction. Your doctor should refer you to a registered or licensed dietician who is practiced in the art creating of diabetic diets.

There is also a whole food industry that is being built up around the fact that diabetes is becoming such a wide spread disease. There are an estimated 17 million cases in the United States alone with 5.9 million of those going undiagnosed. With the continuing obesity epidemic in this country that number is expected to rise, particularly for type 2 diabetes. This food industry creates and markets products that are diabetes friendly. They can do this because of the many artificial sweetener choices that are out today. This allows even the most of picky of eaters to enjoy foods that were off limits in the past.
